How to Prevent and Get Rid of Frizzy Hair

If you have frizzy hair and are struggling to tame it, you’re not alone.

Everyone gets frizzy hair at times – it’s normal, and may even give some hair types extra volume. If you’re trying to achieve a certain style, however, your frizz can get in the way – resulting in a messy final look.

Don’t worry, though: for effective frizz control, all you need is quality hair care and an effective styling method. Below, the team at Shark will teach you about the different types of frizzy hair, and discuss not only how to eliminate it – but how to prevent frizzy hair from occurring in the first place.

Types of frizzy hair

Frizz can appear in a variety of ways. So, when learning how to get rid of frizz, it’s important to understand your hair texture and hair type, as this can influence which part of your hair is frizzy – and how to treat it.

Discover the different forms of frizzy hair below.

  • Whole head:
This is where all or most of your hair is frizzy. This will give a poufy appearance.
  • Surface only:
Also known as static hair (because it can be caused by actual static in your hair), this is when your frizz is only on the outside of your hair. This frizz will poke outwards, as though it’s being repelled from your head.
  • Ends only:
This is when your frizziness is only found at the ends of your hair. This will usually contribute to, and be accompanied by, split ends and knots.
  • Top of the head:
Sometimes known as halo-frizz, this type of frizz only appears at the top of the head. Because this frizz type is only in a certain area, it’s usually caused by the way you’re washing or styling your hair.

How to prevent frizzy hair

Preventing frizzy hair will require changes to your hair care routine and the way you’re styling. Below, we’ll take you through a few of our top hair care tips, so you can learn how to stop frizzy hair.

Lower the temperature

The easiest frizz control solution is to have colder showers.

Hot showers are awesome – but just because you’re enjoying them, doesn’t mean your hair is, too. Colder showers reduce frizz and flyaways as they maintain your natural oils and support your hair’s ability to retain moisture.

Cut your hair

By regularly trimming your hair, you can keep frizz – as well as split ends and knots that can continue the problem – to a minimum.

This is a must if your frizzy hair is at your ends only, but isn’t as effective a strategy for top-of-the-head or whole-head frizz.

Style wisely

The key to knowing how to prevent frizzy hair is to use heat-safe stylers.

To this end, the Shark FlexStyle is a versatile styler with multiple attachments. Its in-built air-drying system allows you to begin each style with a damage-free blow dry, which is crucial for frizz control. Better still, the FlexStyle’s attachments enable you to easily create your style of choice: such as a stretched blowout, soft curls or natural waves.

Anti-frizz hair care

Anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner imparts much-needed moisture to your hair, smoothing and rehydrating it. Since dryness contributes to frizzy hair, this additional hydration helps reduce frizz and promote shinier, more supple locks.

Extra conditioning

Applying an additional hair mask will impart more hydration to dry, frizzy hair.

So, when learning how to get rid of frizzy hair, make a hair mask one of your first ports of call – just be sure to apply it after washing your hair with shampoo. Shampoo opens the hair cuticles, readying your hair to absorb nourishment.

How to control frizzy hair when styling

To manage frizzy hair as you style, you’ll need a method that covers all your hair; and to tame pre-existing frizz, while not creating any more.

Follow the steps below to learn how to get rid of frizz as you style.

1. Apply a protectant

First up, we recommend using a heat protectant cream – especially if your hair is very dry and frizzy, or if you simply want to be extra safe. Apply a small amount of protectant to your hair and gently brush through to ensure the product covers your whole head. If you’re using a heat-safe styler, you can skip this step.

2. Blowdry with a diffuser

When it comes to styling naturally curly hair, always use a diffuser attachment to blow-dry. This will evenly distribute the heat, drying the hair without losing shape.

Here, we recommend using the pixie diffuse method. This involves turning your styler off to let your hair gather into the bowl of your diffuser, before turning it back on for 15 seconds and slowly removing your hair from the diffuser.

3. Smooth with a styling concentrator

When learning how to prevent frizzy hair, smooth away flyways using your styling concentrator attachment. To do this, we recommend using the Shark SpeedStyle with the RapidGloss Finisher attachment. Once attached, gently run the RapidGloss Finisher down all your hair for a smooth, salon-like finish. Your SpeedStyle will intelligently adjust its airflow and heat settings for ultra-fast styling.

4. Style in sections

By styling in sections, you ensure that all your hair is frizz-free. Sometimes, frizzy hair can appear right next to sections you think you’ve styled, when really that part of your hair needs another once-over.

Depending on the length of your hair, we recommend sectioning your hair into two or three horizontal sections. To minimise frizz, make sure that any hair near each part is grouped correctly. If some hair from one section is mingling with another, these are more likely to frizz.

Finally, thoroughly style each section:

  • If curling, let your hair wrap evenly around the barrel of your auto-wrap curler, allowing the Coanda Technology to do the hard work. Or use your oval brush attachment for a more controlled curl.
  • If straightening, attach your paddle brush attachment and gently glide your styler downwards or outwards.

Now that you’ve discovered how to stop frizzy hair, get ready to enjoy new and improved styles. But first, learn how to do an at home blowout.
